Janani Suraksha Yojana 2023

The Janani Suraksha Yojana was launched in April 2005 by the then Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh. Janani Suraksha scheme was launched by modifying the National Maternity Benefit Scheme (NMBS). Although the government has divided pregnant women into two categories on the basis of urban and rural areas, which are as follows-

  1. Pregnant women of rural areas:- Under the Janani Suraksha scheme, all the women of rural areas who are living below the poverty line during pregnancy are provided financial assistance of 1400 UPA from the government. Along with this, ₹ 300 will be provided by the government to the Asha Sahyog for delivery incentive and ₹ 300 more will be given for providing post-delivery services.
  2. Pregnant women of urban areas:- Under this scheme, financial assistance of ₹ 1000 is provided to all pregnant women of urban areas at the time of delivery. And the ASHA assistant is given ₹ 200 as a delivery incentive and an additional ₹ 200 for providing post-delivery services.

  • Expected pregnant women delivering at a Public Health Facility or Accredited Private Hospital will receive Rs. 1400/- cash assistance, regardless of age, birth order, or income group (BPL & APL).

  • Expected pregnant women delivering at a Public Health Facility or Accredited Private Hospital in an urban area will receive Rs. 1000/- cash assistance, irrespective of age, birth order, or income group (BPL & APL).

  • Expected pregnant women from the BPL category delivering at home will receive Rs. 500/- cash assistance, regardless of age or number of children.

  • The state has introduced Direct Bank Transfer (DBT) as a payment method to ensure that eligible pregnant women receive their Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) benefits directly in their bank accounts.

  • Under this scheme, every registered beneficiary must have MCH (Maternal and Child Health) card along with a Janani Suraksha Yojana card.
  • Janani Suraksha Scheme 2023 is a 100% Central Government Scheme that provides cash assistance.

  • An amount of Rs 500 will be given to pregnant women who give birth at home with the help of Anganwadi or Asha workers.
